Mining the Moon

by guest author Josh B.

There is a lot of activity going in at NASA at the moment. By now, almost everyone should be aware of the latest mission to Pluto and some of the discoveries made there. Now there is a plan in the works to establish a permanent colony on our own moon, Luna. NASA believes that there is water within the moon’s crust that can be used to create rocket fuel. This new information comes from a recent unmanned mission to the moon that seemed to indicate the presence of water. Before any such colonization plan can be put into motion, NASA needs to explore this theory further by determining how much water (if any) is actually there and where it is. NASA also wants to use the moon as a staging platform to launch manned missions deeper into our solar system. The lower gravity should make it easier to explore deeper and further than we ever have using manned spacecraft. Using this new launch center on the moon, NASA wants to send a manned mission to Mars as their first foray beyond Earth orbit.
